Arnold Palmer the King of Golf
Saturday, December 19, 2009 13:49Considered one of the greatest American players in the description of men’s professional golf, Arnold Daniel Palmer nicknamed “The King” is one of golf’s most well loved stars of the sports television age. Arnold Palmer was educated to play golf by his father Deacon Palmer early on in his life. He would do on the Latrobe course perfecting his play at age 7. While attending the Wake Forest University he was granted a golf scholarship, but was small-lived due to his leaving and enlisting in the Coast Guard. He served three years in the Coast Guard while perfecting his golf skills. He returned to competitive golf to win the US Amateur Championship in 1954. The following year, 1955, he won the Canadian Open in his rookie year. With his charismatic personality and playing skill, Palmer made golf well loved to mainstream America.
Palmer’s most prolific years were from 1960-1963, winning 29 PGA Tour events among the Hickok Belt and Sports Illustrated Magazine’s Sportsman of The Year. Palmer paved the way for future American golfers the status of the Open Championship (British Open). Not many American golfers played the British Open before due to many reasons such as travel distance, course styles, small prize purses and foreign environment. Palmer was eligible to play The Senior for its first season in 1980, and helped it become well-known.
Palmer’s career championships contain; The Master in 1958, 1960, 1962 and 1964, The US Open in 1960, The Open Championship in 1961, 1962, The World Match Play in England and five Senior Majors.
