Our Heritage

Bowling Green is a Family-Owned Course on Land That’s Been Handed Down Through the Generations

For over 40 years, the same family has been running Bowling Green. And that same family has been dedicated to making sure that daily-fee golfers and members enjoy a traditional golf course that’s friendly, magnificently-maintained, enjoyable, and well away from the noise and hassles of the city.

Albert Riggs and June Salmon created Bowling Green. Salmon owned a construction company and Riggs owned the property—it had been in the family for over 175 years. Before becoming a golf course, the land was a dairy farm. With brothers George Salmon and Jerre Riggs, the team contracted with noted architect Geoffrey Cornish to design a golf course that would be scenic, challenging, and a perfect fit for the existing land. The course opened on Memorial Day 1967.

Relax—You’re at Home at Bowling Green.

From that very first day of play, golfers have enjoyed the family atmosphere and the very relaxed and informal setting. Albert and George, the day-to-day operators, worked hard to enhance the family theme by greeting the first players at sunrise and saying goodbye to the last players. Bowling Green quickly developed a reputation as a wonderful golf course with tree-lined fairways plus an inviting, glitz-free country club atmosphere.

Passing the Torch so that Today’s Golfers Continue to Enjoy All that Bowling Green has to Offer.

In the early 1980s, the founders of the course passed along the operational responsibilities to cousins Joe Riggs, Bruce Salmon and Joel Riggs—sons of the original owners. The cousins were part of Bowling Green from the outset, first hand-picking stones from the soil before the fairways were seeded, and later expanding the business into residential development. Recently, Bruce Salmon and Joel Riggs sold their ownership interests to Joe Riggs and his wife, Cindy. Cindy and Joe and have been joined in the business by their son Wil.

As part of the changes, we have appointed longtime associate Thom Bishop to be Director of Golf. Joel Riggs has stepped into a new role as Greens Superintendent assisted by long time associate Ernie Headley. George Heslin has joined us as our head teaching professional.

We remain committed to continue improving our course conditions and we are determined to have our goals continue to mirror those of the founders:

  • Offer a high-quality product
  • Hire pleasant people to provide the professional, friendly service that all golfers deserve
  • Remember that the land came first.
